FIND THE CHRISTMAS UNICORN.

Well, this is a welcome surprise! Some may have bemoaned Sufjan’s turn away from hushed folk music (and return to electronic music), but I embraced it. Here, as with the excellent Age of Adz, Sufjan and friends refract lyrical emotional ambivalence through an absolutely brilliant, ecstatic sonic prism. Even more bizarre is the fact that the second half of this song is an unexpected reinterpretation of Joy Division’s classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart” that completely subverts the tone of the original.
